Weekly Rant - The US and Poverty.

The below video is more than a year old, but it applies today more than ever. In the video CNBC discusses why they think poverty in America continues and what we could do to end it. I disagree with just about every word in this video, and books could be written about how wrong it is. Yet, I would like to draw your attention to a specific line of thought.

1. Poverty was on the decline until the pandemic hit.
2. Minimum wage is too low, and this increases poverty.
3. The US does not offer enough welfare programs.
4. Poverty numbers are inflated because are measurements are bad (This I agree with).
5. Government programs are the solution. Social security and Gov handouts during the pandemic are CNBCs proof of this.
6. Universal Basic Income is the answer to solve poverty.

We currently spend $1.1 TRILLION on welfare programs in the US per year. But this is not enough according to CNBC. Let me remind everyone that there are only 333 Million people living in the US. That means we spend $3,303.30 per person. If 11% of the 333 million people live in poverty that means we spend $30,030.03 on each person in poverty in America. That is a $15/hr. fulltime job. If we have not been able to solve the problem of poverty via the government spending $1T, then maybe it is not the governments problem to solve. Maybe it is ours?

• A dock strike is looming and this could upend the entire economy and throw a huge wrench into the presidential election. Over 85,000 dock workers are threatening a strike on October 1st if the US Maritime Alliance cannot come to agreeable terms with the doc workers association. The supply chain issues that would result from shutting down these docks associated with the threatened strike would be catastrophic. Democrats would be the ones hurt the most in election season say analysts.

• It has been known for a while now that plastic recycling is too expensive and not practical to achieve large scale success. Now the state of CA is suing Exxon, a huge producer of petrochemicals (stuff for plastic), for billions for alleged trickery. Exxon lobbied for and claimed that plastic recycling success could be achieved but only 5% of US plastic was actually recycled in any given time frame. 

• The second assassination attempt on Donald Trump was by a man who offered $150K to anyone who could get the job done. Seems kind of small, don't it? I mean for a guy everyone claims to be Hitler and was once the leader of the most powerful country in the world and has a chance at that position again. I'm thinking $15M would be the bare minimum. Klaus Schwab or Mr. Soros is probably good for it. Then again, I have no idea what the political assassination market standards are.

• After October 20th only one Kmart store will be left in the contiguous US. It will be in Miami in case you were wondering. Kmart filed for bankruptcy back in 2018.

• A Studio apartment in the old Goldman Sachs HQ building in NYC is going for $4,000/month. A three bedroom is going for $10,000/month. I live in northeast PA, a 90 min drive to the City and I own my 3-bedroom home with a yard for less than half what a studio apartment would go for. I know NYC is a different world, but still hard not to be sticker shocked. 

• Cars with tech from China will be banned in 2027 according to the Biden administration.

• Boeing has Offred a 30% raise to end the strike. The embattled aviation company is desperate to end this and gave the strikers until Friday to ratify the deal. 

• The S&P 500 and the Dow set new records this week coming off the Fed Rate cuts. Intel is getting a huge and needed bump thanks to a multibillion dollar investment from Apollo. 

• Before the current WNBA season no WNBA game reached 1 million viewers since 2008. This year 24 WNBA games reached 1 million viewers and 21 off them featured Caitlin Clark. Given that I worked for the NBA for some time I know how much revenue this generates for the organization as a whole. Part of me is happy to see the WNBA getting some notoriety but the larger part of me is disappointed that our society pays so much attention to a child's game. Caitlin Clark seems to be one of the best female basketball players ever, but the people tuning in to watch are doing so because of media hype. Which is just an indicator as to how easily influenced we all are. 

• The Biden Administration continues to push Israel in the direction of a diplomatic solution with Hezbollah. One must wonder how long before a direct war with Iran starts? Israel can easily be accused of baiting the Islamic idealogues of Iran funded terrorist groups, but this conflict is inevitable and will probably be ongoing until the end of time. When one groups believes in an ideology that calls for the death of the group, then an end to the conflict is reached in only one of two ways. Extinction of one of the groups, or extinction of the ideology. (Or America just comes in with a really big stick and says knock it off)

• Indian (the country famous for curry, not native Americans...you racist colonialist) owned company Oyo just bought Motel 6 for $1.9B so its US footprint could increase.
